The workflow

From text to braille pages.

  1. Open or write

Start with an empty document or import Word DOCX, RTF, TXT or Excel. Select sheets and a cell range when importing Excel.

  2. Translate and edit

Ctrl+T opens translation and template options. Edit the braille directly; lines and later pages reflow as you change the content.

  3. Check and emboss

Review page numbers, margins and page breaks. Ctrl+E opens Emboss with printer, copies, page range and single- or double-sided output.

Designed for braille pages

Control the content and layout.

Norwegian uncontracted six-dot braille is the default. Choose Norwegian contraction levels 1–3 or uncontracted eight-dot braille in the template settings.

Margins and numbering

A4 starts with 33 total cells, a three-cell binding margin and no outer margin. Binding switches sides on the back. Page numbers have a reserved line and can be moved or turned off.

Adaptable templates

Regular documents, sheets with two, three or four panels, and eight repeated business cards. Styles control headings and indents. An automatic table of contents is optional and off by default.

Save and exchange

MAVEA files retain the source text, braille and layout. Export formatted braille as BRF or Unicode BRL. These exchange formats do not replace Duxbury's native project format.

Keyboard, screen reader and braille display

Accessibility throughout your work.

The app uses native Windows controls and keyboard commands, with NVDA, JAWS and Narrator as accessibility targets. Adjust text size, system colours and high contrast.

Source text follows your screen reader's own output table. The braille editor contains braille cells. Read-only labels such as “Page 2:” help navigation and are never embossed.

The interface follows the system language and is available in Norwegian and English. Changing the interface language does not change your document or its braille translation table.
