Install or update
- Download the installer from the MAVEA BRAILLE page. You need Windows 10/11 on a 64-bit Intel/AMD PC and about 1 GB of free space.
- Close MAVEA BRAILLE if it is running. Open MAVEA-BRAILLE-0.8.1-Windows-x64-Setup.exe and follow the wizard. Choose Norwegian or English for installation.
- Start MAVEA BRAILLE from the Start menu. Installation is for your user account; .NET is included. No account or activation is required in the app.
- To update, install the newer release in the same folder. Documents and recovery settings are preserved. Updates are not downloaded automatically.
This preview installer is not code-signed. Windows may display an unverified-publisher or reputation warning. Check that the file comes from the link on mavea.no. SHA-256 checksums are provided with the release. Contact us if you are uncertain; do not disable your antivirus.
Uninstall through Windows Settings → Apps. Save your own documents in Documents or another separate folder, not the program folder. Uninstallation leaves documents and recovery data outside the program folder intact.
Your first document
- Write in the empty document or press Ctrl+O to import.
- Press Ctrl+T, select braille format and template, and translate. Norwegian uncontracted six-dot braille is the default.
- Edit and check the braille. Ctrl+1 selects source text, Ctrl+2 braille, and F6 changes views. F4 reports position; F8 shows boundaries.
- Save with Ctrl+S in MAVEA format. Keep the original when exporting BRF or BRL.
- Ctrl+E opens Emboss. Check printer, paper, margins, copies and Double-sided before confirming.
F1 opens the included user guide. Menus show further shortcuts. Source text on your braille display follows your screen reader's own output table; the app does not change it.
Printer and paper
Install the Index Windows driver and add your Everest-D V5 or BrailleBox V4 printer queue. The driver is not bundled in this public download. Select the Index queue in Emboss.
A4 defaults to 33 total cells, with three for binding and no outer margin, leaving 30 text cells. The maximum is 35 total cells. Double-sided printing switches binding to the opposite side on the back. Clear “Double-sided” to use one side of each sheet.
Page numbers reserve a full line at the top or bottom. New copies start on a new sheet. The embosser's paper settings must match the app. A sent job confirms delivery to the print queue, not that embossing has finished.
Known limitations
- This is a preview release. Automated core checks have run, but the new installer has not been run on Windows on the build machine. We welcome installation and screen-reader feedback.
- DOCX can retain structure; RTF is imported as text. Old Word DOC needs Word in regular import. Some conversions and Excel recalculation require a separate LibreOffice installation.
- Excel uses saved formula results unless recalculation is selected. Check imported tables, OCR and reading order.
- Direct embossing does not support A3 landscape. A3 booklet mode has printer and page-range requirements. Not every template supports every print orientation.
- BRF cannot retain eight-dot cells or full MAVEA editing structure. Duxbury DXP/DXB projects are not supported.
- Mathematics, music and tactile graphics have limited support. Scanned music requires separate Audiveris software and careful review. The app does not promise full Duxbury equivalence.
